Heron Creature Mark
An Aesthetic Creature Design.
PART I: CREATURE MARK
The first objective involved choosing an animal to represent in a stylized graphic form. Using geometrical structures as a base for the design, the animal’s form must depict its likeness in the natural world.
RESEARCH
SKETCHING
Before designing, research into the behavioral attributes and aesthetic characteristics of the animal was crucial. Analyzing the forms of the heron led to an understanding of the geometric forms that would best translate to a dynamic and recognizable form.
DIGITAL ITERATIONS
Exploring Wing Revisions
The body of the heron was developed through the use of geometric lines and angles, ultimately depicting a standing pose to convey the heron’s poised elegance. Further iterations explored adding dynamic details such as the bird’s head plumes, wing feather details, and an implied branch.
FINAL CREATURE MARK
The final creature mark depicts an elegantly posed heron, with the bird’s details achieved through implied negative shapes. Through varied explorations of the wing structure, the final design includes repetition of a triangle shape set on a geometrical path to suggest the heron’s long feathers.
PART II: INTERPRETIVE PHRASE
Continuing with the second part of the project, a phrase associated with the animal was to be included in composition with the creature mark. The phrase reinforces the distinct characteristics of the heron.
“The elegant and reserved heron wades through cold ponds.”
IDEATION PROCESS
The final Interpretive Phrase with the Creature Mark represents natural characteristics of the heron through graphic elements. Negative space in the typography helps navigate the viewer through the compositions.
